Data Processing on the Body - Centered Cubic Lattice

چکیده
The body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice is the optimal three-dimensional sampling lattice. Its optimality stems from the fact that its dual, the face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice, achieves the highest sphere-packing efficiency. In order to approximate a scalar-valued function from samples that reside on a BCC lattice, spline-like compact kernels have been recently proposed. The lattice translates of an admissible BCC kernel form a shift-invariant approximation space that yields higher quality approximations as compared to similar splinelike spaces associated with the ubiquitous Cartesian cubic (CC) lattice. In this work, we focus on the approximation of derived quantities from the scalar BCC point samples and investigate two problems: the accurate estimation of the gradient and the approximate solution to Poisson’s equation within a rectangular domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In either case, we seek an approximation in a prescribed shiftinvariant space and obtain the necessary coefficients via a discrete convolution operation. Our solution methodology is optimal in an asymptotic sense in that the resulting coefficient sequence respects the asymptotic approximation order provided by the space. In order to implement the discrete convolution operation on the BCC lattice, we develop efficient three-dimensional versions of the discrete Fourier and sine transforms. These transforms take advantage of the Cartesian coset structure of the BCC lattice in the spatial domain and the geometric properties of the Voronoi tessellation formed by the dual FCC lattice in the Fourier domain. We validate our solution methodologies by conducting qualitative and quantitative experiments on the CC and BCC lattices using both synthetic and real-world datasets. In the context of volume visualization, our results show that, owing to the superior reconstruction of normals, the BCC lattice leads to a better rendition of surface details. Furthermore, like the approximation of the function itself, this gain in quality comes at no additional cost.

Isosurface Construction from a Data Set Sampled on a Face-centered-cubic Lattice
A method for constructing the isosurface from a data set on a face-centered-cubic lattice has been developed. Generally, a three-dimensional scalar field is sampled on an orthogonal cubic lattice. And an algorithm called Marching Cubes is widely used for constructing the isosurface on this lattice. It is known, however, that data sampling of a three-dimensional scalar field on a face-centered-c...
متن کاملFast Computed Tomography and Volume Rendering Using the Body-centered Cubic Lattice
Two main tasks in the field of volumetric image processing are acquisition and visualization of 3D data. The main challenge is to reduce processing costs, while maintaining high accuracy. To achieve these goals for volume rendering (visualization), we demonstrate that non-separable box splines for body-centered cubic (BCC) lattices can be adapted to fast evaluation on graphics hardware. Thus, t...

For generic 3D sampling, the Body Centered Cubic (BCC) lattice and the Face Centered Cubic (FCC) lattice are significantly superior to the traditionally popular Cartesian Cubic (CC) lattice. Motivated by the goal of high visual fidelity in the visualization community, this thesis investigates the relative perceptual merits of high quality reconstruction filters for CC, BCC, and FCC sampled data...
متن کاملMultiple CSLs for the body centered cubic lattice
Ordinary Coincidence Site Lattices (CSLs) are defined as the intersection of a lattice Γ with a rotated copy RΓ of itself. They are useful for classifying grain boundaries and have been studied extensively since the mid sixties. Recently the interests turned to so-called multiple CSLs, i.e. intersections of n rotated copies of a given lattice Γ, in particular in connection with lattice quantize...
